L3 MAS, as part of Canada’s Combat Ship Team, announced today that it was awarded a contract from Lockheed Martin Canada to provide the Integrated Communications Systems (ICS) for the Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) program. Lockheed Martin Canada was selected as the winning bidder for the CSC program by Irving Shipbuilding. Irving Shipbuilding is the CSC Prime Contractor and will build 15 ships at Halifax Shipyard.
“We are honoured to be a partner on Canada’s Combat Ship Team,” said Ugo Paniconi, Acting Vice President and General Manager of L3 MAS. “This contract award is another great example of L3 Technologies’ commitment to jobs and the transfer of technology and innovation into Canada. We are committed to working across the company to bring the best solutions to the end customer.”
Under this initial contract, the L3 team, consisting of L3 MAS, L3 Communication Systems-East (CS-E) and L3 Communication Systems-Canada (CS-C), will design the integrated communications systems for the ships, including external communications, satellite communications and internal communications (comprising entertainment and public address), as well as the communications control and management system.
The Canadian Surface Combatant project is the largest and most complex procurement ever undertaken by the Government of Canada. It will deliver lasting economic benefits to Canadian industry through billions of dollars of value proposition commitments in innovation across Canada’s priority areas.
The winning bid, offering BAE’s Type 26 Global Combat Ship, combined with Lockheed Martin Canada’s combat management system, CMS 330, was put forward by a team of six companies with a strong Canadian-focused supply chain: BAE Systems, CAE, Lockheed Martin Canada, L3 Technologies, MDA and Ultra Electronics. Collectively, the pan-Canadian team has a uniquely skilled Canadian workforce and supply chain that together employ 9,000 Canadians in 40 facilities from coast to coast, and engage more than 4,000 small and medium-sized enterprises.
The Type 26 is a globally deployable, multi-role warship that meets current and future demands of the Royal Canadian Navy. It has been specifically designed for high-end Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and will be capable of performing a wide range of missions around the globe.
